The Kongo female sculptures are the evocation of more amiable spiritual forces than those symbolized by the male representations – the nkondi – and were probably used during fertility rites.
This very old statuette, judging by the position of the child (head back), the downcast eyes and the sad face of the mother, probably evokes a recent death.
The bilongo (dorsal cavity) was probably intended to receive fetish materials evoking the child
