The Yombe maternity

The Yombe maternities are perfect examples of Kongo sculpture which clearly demonstrates the importance given to the head and scarifications.

The Kongo female sculptures are the evocation of more amiable spiritual forces than those symbolized by the male representations – the nkondi – and were probably used during fertility rites.
