The Kongo gesture
Gesture is a very elaborate form of expression among the Kongo!
Among the most representative examples, we obviously think of the "Kongo pose", left hand on the hip and right hand raised which often brandishes a weapon that is found on many nail fetishes.
The seated position, legs crossed as on the statuette presented here, testifies to the dignity and importance of the character represented, of his great honorability too. It is the mark of his competence which allows him to protect and enlighten the community. A Kongo proverb reminds us: "The elder sitting with his legs crossed wishes to be greeted with respect".
The head resting on the hand shows the circumspection of a person who thinks before speaking; it can also be the attitude of an ancestor meditating on death and showing great sadness.
The fascinating look threatens the sources of troubles and dissensions that could appear.
This very beautiful statuette, with a beautiful patina and fine scarifications, is very representative of Kongo art
